Psalm 19:13 Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression.
Are Their Degrees of Sin? All sin is terrible; all sin is the transgression of the law-but is all sin equal in the sight of God?
Jesus said in John 19:11; 'He that delivered me unto thee, has the greater sin.' The Stoic philosophers held that all sins were equal; but this Scripture clearly holds forth that there is a gradual difference in sin; some are greater than others; some are 'mighty sins,' and crying sins.'
Amos 5: 12; For I know your manifold transgressions and your mighty sins: they afflict the just, they take a bribe, and they turn aside the poor in the gate from their right.
Gen 18: 21. I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know. Every sin speaks, but some sins cry. As some diseases are worse than others, and some poisons more venomous, so some sins are more heinous. 'Ye have done worse than your fathers, your sins have exceeded theirs.'
Jer 16: 12; Ezek 16: 47. Yet hast thou not walked after their ways, nor done after their abominations: but, as if that were a very little thing, thou wast corrupted more than they in all thy ways.
There are some sins which are greater than others because:
(1) There was difference in the offerings under the law; the sin offering was greater than the trespass offering. (2) Because some sins are not capable of pardon as others are, therefore they must needs be more heinous, as the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost. Matt 12: 31. (3) Because some sins have a greater degree of punishment than others. 'Ye shall receive the greater damnation.' Matt 23: 14. 'Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?' God would not punish one more than another if his sin was not greater. It is true, 'all sins are equally wicked in respect of the object,' that is, all sin is against God, but, in another sense, all sins are not alike In the passage we read in Psalm 19, we find David asking; Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression.
What is a presumptuous sin? They are sins which presume upon the mercy and grace of God. They are sins which are committed by a person who thinks that God will not do anything about the sin. They have gotten away with it before, and nothing bad happened! They believe, that God overlooks certain sins, simply because He loves too much, or is incapable of really doing anything about it. Some seem to think; “Well I’ve gone this long in my sin, and nothing has happened to me yet. God is not going to suddenly panic, and do something about it now!” Sins committed in arrogance and prideful rebellion! That is presumption! This sin is committed by both Christian and non Christian alike. However, it is to the Christian-the Believer, the professor of faith in Christ-the one who would answer the question: “Are you a Christian? With a resounding yes! This is who this is addressed to this morning. It is the Christian who sits where you are today, hearing the preacher say; “Do right, do right, do right” and in your heart you say to yourself; “Preacher, I’ve not done right, and everything is ok. Nothing bad has happened to me yet. You don’t know what you are talking about! That is what Presumption is! Presumptuous sins are so bad in the sight of God, that in Numbers 15:30 we read: But the soul that doeth ought presumptuously, whether he be born in the land, or a stranger, the same reproacheth the LORD; and that soul shall be cut off from among his people.
Verse 31 goes on to say: Because he hath despised the word of the LORD, and hath broken his commandment, that soul shall utterly be cut off; his iniquity shall be upon him. To sin presumptuously, is to sin against convictions and illuminations, or an enlightened conscience. 'They are of those that rebel against the light.' Job 24: 13. Did not Pilate sin against conviction, in condemning Christ? He knew that for envy the Jews had delivered him. Matt 27: 18. He confessed he 'found no fault in him.' Luke 23: 14. His own wife sent to him saying, 'Have nothing to do with that just man.' Matt 27: 19. Yet for all this, he gave the sentence of death against Christ. He sinned presumptuously, against an enlightened conscience. How often have we sinned, knowing clearly what is right and what is wrong, and choosing to ignore the light, and to sin anyway.
How many ways may a man sin against illuminations and convictions?
(1) When he lives in the total neglect of duty. He is not ignorant that it is a duty to read the Word, yet he lets the Bible lie by as rusty armour, seldom made us of. He is convinced that it is a duty to pray in his family, yet he can go days and months, and God never hears of him; he calls God Father, but never asks his blessing. Neglect of family-prayer, as it were, uncovers the roof of men's houses, and makes way for a curse to be rained down upon their table.
(2) When a man lives in the same sins he condemns in others. 'Thou that judges, does the same things.' Rom 2: 1. How many videos, music cd’s magazines, etc are in our homes that we know we sould not be reading, listening to, watching etc. and yet with the clear knowledge of light revealed, we do it anyway? How may times young people have your parents instructed you, and warned you not to engage in certain behaviors, but as soon as you left the house you found some way to do these things? Look at Romans 2: 21-24 Our world helps in our presumption, by renaming sin and calling it what it really is not, just to make it more comfortable.
Homosexuality instead of an abomination against Almighty God-Alternative lifestyle
Alcoholism instead of drunkenness which is sin-A Disease
Gambling a terrible sin-is now a sport-and also a way to fund important projects.
Euthanasia- murder-a mercy killing and an act of love.
Abortion-murder-yet now a choice-a woman’s right
And on and on we could go. Abraham Lincoln once asked; “If you call a sheeps tail a leg, how many legs would he have? Those asked, answered “five!” “Wrong, said Lincoln; “there would only be four, calling a tail a leg doesn’t make it one” Calling sin something else, does not make it not a sin! (3) When a man sins after vows. 'Thy vows are upon me, O God.' Psa 56: 12. A vow is a religious promise made to God, to dedicate ourselves to him. A vow is not only a purpose, but a promise. Every votary makes himself a debtor; he binds himself to God in a solemn manner. Now, to sin after a vow, to vow himself to God, and give his soul to the devil, must needs be against the highest convictions.
(4) When a man sins after counsels, admonitions, warnings, he cannot plead ignorance. The trumpet of the gospel has been blown in his ears, and sounded a retreat to call him off from his sins, he has been told of his injustice, living in malice, keeping bad company, yet he would venture upon sin. This is to sin against conviction (5) When a man sins against express combinations and threatening. God has thundered out threatenings against such sins Turn to' Psa 68: 21. Now go to Isa 5: 18,19. There are those who hear the warnings yet do not pay any attention to them, These are sins of presumption.
(6) When a man sins under affliction. God not only thunders by threatening, but lets his thunderbolt fall. He inflicts judgements on a person so that he may read his sins in his punishment, and yet he sins. Turn to 2 Chronicles 28. Ahaz’s sin was made greater because of his presumption upon God. He refused to stop no matter what happened. 'We will walk after our own devices.' Jer 18: 12. Though there be death and hell at every step, we will keep on going the way we are going.
Listen, there is no way to continue like this without God doing something about it! You are not, and will not be the exception! God will always judge sin! Do not presume upon God’s mercy and call it weakness. Do not presume upon God’s grace as if it is your right to have a free pass. You will reap what you sow! I was reading just the other day of new studies being done concerning the usage of marijuana by young people today—M is stronger now, and there is a definite link between the use of M and mental disorders. Yet, many so- called Christians use it. Fools! Alcohol definitely shrinks brain cells-no question about it-yet so-called Christians continue to drink; Fools! Presumptuous and self-willed! Turn to 2 Peter 2. We live in a world today of presumptuousness in the church of God! Look at what God says concerning these people. Are you presumptuous? Are you professing to know Christ, and still thinking that you can get away with sin and sinful behavior? Do you honestly think that God does not know what you are up to? In Ezekiel 11:5 we read: and the Spirit of the LORD fell upon me, and said unto me, Speak; Thus saith the LORD; Thus have ye said, O house of Israel: for I know the things that come into your mind, every one of them. Repentance is your only hope! You who know Christ a servant of His must repent of the arrogance and pride which cause you to think that you can get away with presumptuousness with God! He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Maybe you are here this morning as an unbeliever-Jesus is not Lord-your sins have not been forgiven-you perhaps are under the assumption and presumption that you have plenty of time to get right with God. God tells us in His Word; “My Spirit shall not always strive with man…” Do not wait a moment more….. Cry out to Him for His mercy and forgiveness through the blood of Christ! You that are saved… Do not live as if you were not! Do not be so arrogant to think that you can continue as you are….. Moses was denied entrance into Canaan; Annanias and Sapphira were killed; Abraham was saddled with Hagar and Ishmael…. Let your prayer be that of Davids; Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression.
